Opening Scenes and Characters - 'Shaun of the Dead'
The second film that I'm looking at for introducing characters is 'Shaun Of The Dead'.
Shaun, who sits opposite Liz throughout the scene, is not really paying attention to what Liz is saying and doesn't really seem to have much interest in her friends either. The scene establishes that Shaun is easily distracted and finds it difficult to focus; Shaun's body language and facial expressions show he is not interested in the domestic nature of a relationship (or, at least, that he struggles with this) and that he is much more at home drinking in the pub with his friends.
Ed, Shaun's best friend, is rude and seems like the type of person who rubs people up the wrong way and finds it difficult to make, or keep, friends. It is clear from the conversation that Liz (Shaun's girlfriend) is more talkative and more driven than Shaun. Shaun comes across as apathetic and it appears that Ed is clearly a burden on him (according to Liz and Liz's friends). These are character traits which recur throughout the narrative.
